Top five music phones in India

Music phones are becoming more relevant with increasing digital options including app stores, streaming websites and more.


Many people would not buy a phone unless it had FM or an MP3 player as these users are not satisfied with just the ability to make calls. If you are one of them, here are a few phones that will keep you humming all the time.

Nokia N8 (Rs 22,699)

Nokia N8 makes a great music player, especially since it organises tracks efficiently. Scrolling is smooth and the user interface is visually attractive.

Music lovers want a loud speaker and it's there in the Nokia N8, so users can enjoy music even if they don't have a headphone handy.

It is possible to use either Bluetooth stereo headphones or wired 3.5 mm jack headphones with this Nokia device, which even has an FM player. One great feature of the phone is that it has an FM transmitter with which users can transmit songs loaded on the phone to an FM radio nearby, such as the one in a car audio system.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 (Rs 12,699)

Xperia X8 works well for those who are looking for music that doesn't cost the earth. The speakers are very loud and are great if you want to listen to loud music with (consenting) friends. The headphones that come with it are of good quality.

Transferring music from a personal computer to the Xperia X8 can easily be done with a USB cable. Browsing music albums is not as intuitive as it is in other music phones, but the job gets done. The Mediascape Android app, which Sony Ericsson is famous for, is sadly absent from Xperia X8.


Nokia X2 (Rs 5,000)

Dubbed a music phone, Nokia X2 does expectedly well, especially with headphones. It plays loud music exceedingly well.

The phone's form has been kept such that when users put it on a table the speaker doesn't get blocked. The music related features are accessible using dedicated music keys as well.

Sony Ericsson Aino (Rs 26,990)

The moment Sony Ericsson Aino is closed, it goes into multimedia mode and on the touchscreen users can access five icons including one for music. Its look and feel is very much like that of earlier Sony Ericsson music phones, and the player is easy to use. Music file search is easy, and the library is sorted by composer, artist, album and genre.


HTC Desire HD (Rs 26,399)

Let's talk about the multi media features of HTC Desire HD since users who are interested in music look for multimedia features as well.

The phone handles music very well and has an intuitive user interface. The audio options include SRS (audio enhancement tool) and Dolby Mobile. Some users also suggest that the music quality of HTC Desire HD is better than that of iPhone 4, but then iPhone 4 has its fair share of fans as well. The bass is somewhat a problem in iPhone and HTC Desire HD has that in abundance.

Google is Shutting Down Google Video

If you have any videos uploaded to Google Video, you might want to make sure you've saved them. Google told users this weekend that it is shutting down the service.

It's not much of a surprise that Google has opted to wind things down with Google Video, considering Google owns YouTube, which according to comScore's January figures, is the number one online video content property with 144.1 million unique viewers per month. Google launched Google Video in 2005, and purchased YouTube the following year. Additionally, Google stopped accepting uploads to Google video a few years ago.

So what will happen to videos hosted on the site? Google is asking that users move their content over to YouTube.

"Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback," read an email sent to Google Video users. "Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we're removing the remaining hosted content. We've always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the Web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide."

Google said videos uploaded to the site will be unavailable for playback as of April 29. The company added a download button on the video status page, so that content you want to save can be stored easily. This feature will be removed after May 13.

"We encourage you to move your content to YouTube if you haven't done so already," Google continued. "YouTube offers many video hosting options including the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner."

Google might be placing new emphasis on YouTube. According to a recent report, the company is planning to invest as much as $100 million to produce original content for the site.

Best of MWC 2010 - Most Anticipated Mobiles

The Mobile World Congress that was recently held in Barcelona had all of our favorite mobile manufacturers show off their latest wares. There’s a lot of good stuff coming our way this year in all shapes and sizes. 2010 looks like a great year for mobile technology. Out of the wide range of devices showcased, here are the ones we’re most eager to see hit the Indian shelves this year.

Samsung I8520 Beam

To settle things once and for all, Samsung’s Android (v2.1 Éclair) DLP Pico Projector mobile phone is called the Beam now although it was previously dubbed the Halo. It may be large but who cares, it’s got a projector on board. Not only does it project whatever’s currently visible on your handset’s display, you can also use the camera to project whatever’s underneath the device. The biggest enhancement for the projector is the fact that the handset is equipped to read DivX and XviD file formats for video. It’s a matter of dragging and dropping files for instant playback on a large screen. The main display is scratch resistant and the UI supports multi-touch functionality. Another interesting detail about the display is its Super AMOLED resolution that’s designed to really make colors pop. To run all of this, Samsung has loaded the I8520 with an 800 MHz Processor.

The I8520 Pico Projector Phone also has quite a few more goodies to offer which include

HTC Legend

The Android OS has been gaining ground at a very steady pace and HTC’s custom UI, Sense, has also made quite a bit of progress offering quite a bit more with multi-touch capability. It‘s like a perfect balance of style, class and functionality as it incorporates a 600MHz CPU and a HTC Optical Trackball system for navigation. Sagem Puma Phone

Sagem may not be an entirely popular brand for the average mobile customer although at one time their Bleu range was very prominent in the country. The French manufacturer now sticks to designing handsets that fit into the premium luxury class like the two Porsche mobiles and now they’ve revealed a new handset for apparel designer Puma. This simple yet funky looking touchscreen handset comes with a customized UI that looks very simple and easy to use. It’s built for the sporty lot and incorporates plenty of features to keep them happy. Some of those features include a speedometer for when you’re cycling. There’s even a music player that’s designed to look like a DJ’s turn-table and even works as a scratch pad for music. It also has a solar panel at the back for charging.

Other features the Puma comes with include -

Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro

SE’s Xperia X10 is already on my list of most anticipated lists this year. It’s another Android powered device that has recently spawned ‘offspring’ – the X10 mini and The Mini Pro. The Mini is just a smaller version of the X10 but Mini Pro is that plus a slide out QWERTY adding a little more functionality. With dimensions of 90 x 52 x 17 mm it’s a small palm sized handset which could be serious trouble for Samsung’s Corby Pro. Running on an Android v1.6 OS, SE has infused their new Timescape UI into the Mini Pro. The new UI is designed to make all forms of mobile access extremely finger friendly.

The Mini Pro also comes with -

• 2.5-inch touchscreen display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution
• 3G (with HSDPA and HSUPA), EDGE/GPRS
• Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v2.1, USB 2.0

Windows Mobile 7 Handset

Although there’s been no word on the actual handset itself, I’m looking forward to the latest version of the Windows Mobile operating system, namely version 7. The preliminary layout of the OS looks really good and shows tremendous promise. Microsoft themselves have stated that they’ve decided to start from scratch with this new version and that’s a great idea. Previous versions, although feature rich, were a little drab and mostly dependent on the use of a resistive touchscreen and a stylus. All that changed when the HTC HD came along. But version 7 promises to be more finger friendly and the handset’s ‘divorce’ from the stylus is one scenario I’m really looking forward to.

The latest news from the Microsoft camp is that their handset is expected sometime in 2011 and Asus will be the ones designing and building it. That’s a long wait but it’s just the beginning of the year and a lot can change, I’m hoping.

There’s no word when any of these handsets will hit the Indian market officially, but  have a feeling they just might be worth the wait.

Youtube data becomes corrupted !!

I was reading a forum in CNET regarding the signature errors arise while browsing. I come up to read this hint by a CNET user..(Dango).

Data becomes corrupt. I viewed this video over six months ago it was crystal clear, nearly high definition. (yes, I realize some shots where made with a frosted lenses. See the musician while sitting and singing in the studio, even here the image quality has begun to regrade. Also note the introductory screen with production data posted on it.)

This video has been viewed now over 2,000,000 times and has become fuzzy. 2,000,000 more views and it may not be clearly visible at all. I believe the cause is hardware memory leakage. YouTube has millions of these gradually degrading video files. Each pass through the hardware make them worse. Those that are viewed the most are the most effected. All of them go through various scans periodically so all will become corrupted over time. Try it for yourself, find a new popular video and check back on it from time to time.

ACER Aspire 5738 3D Laptop

Are you getting bored with your ordinary laptop thinking of getting something different this year. Then its for u, this is the year of 3D. Acer Aspire comes with its newest 5738 3D Laptop in market with complete features. This new laptop by Acer is no ordinary model, the simple addition of a letter "D" in the model name has added another dimension to the viewing. Ok I'm bored of that pun too, so let's get down to seeing what is really on offer here, in the Acer Aspire 5738 DG model, with 3D capabilities.

Design and Features
The physical attributes of the notebook are really impressive, with a rugged matte finished interior and glossy exterior. the keyboard is roomy and features full sized shift, enter keys and also a full sized numpad. The mouse button is singular and wide, with a decent tactile reponse, but the keyboard buttons are even better. The finish overall ofthe model is quite nice, no real wobbly overhang in the screen tilt.

The screen itself is 15.6 inches, 1366 x 768 native res. Mainly it's TriDef enabled. We'll get to the Tridef software discussion in a bit. The connections available are USB 2.0 ports x 4, one HDMI out, and two headphone jacks. Connectivity includes the regular Bluetooth, 802.11n, and ethernet. There is a webcam and Flash card reader also. I would like to mention a bit more about the screen, as it's LED backlit, and comes with a brightness rating of 220 nit. The response time is a little slow at 8 ms.

Inside it comes with a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 CPU, 4GB DDR2 667MHz RAM, 320GB 5400-rpm hard drive and a discrete graphics card which too is not really that advanced: ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4750 GPU. We doubt any hardcore games will be rendered in 3D. The OS installed is Windows 7 Home Premium, and most importantly TriDef software is pre installed.

This laptop uses the 3rd type of 3D to display, and that is via polarization. The first two being Anaglyphic (think tinted goggles) and shutter glasses (think Nvidia). With the screen and glasses (included), we receive 3D vision due to light rays of different polarizations falling on each eye. The software's job is to make your 2D stuff into 3D, and that's what this monitor's USP is: playing random photos, videos and games into 3D.
